“QUARTETTI” is an eclectic selection of movements from string quartet literature performed by the full orchestra.
All works are played without a conductor in the tradition of the string quartet.
The concert opens with Shostakovich: the first movement of his first quartet. Of this work the composer states, “in composing [this work] I strove to convey images of childhood- naive, bright springtime moods. One should not search in it for any profundity.”
The concert ends with a short section by Prokofiev, which could also be easily heard as children at play. In between is everything from a tango to Haydn, with some Mendelssohn and Arvo Part thrown in.
