Sharp 5

Sharp 5

TheSharp Five (#5) Jazz Collective is a group of experienced musicians who came together because of their mutual desire to play the post-bop jazz of the late 50’s and early 60’s. While all the members play in numerous other ensembles, this is the one where they can play the music they love the most.

Their repertoire includes music by Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley and other jazz greats of that era, and also includes songs by more modern artists such as Roy Hargrove and Christian McBride that carry the same great vibe.  The group was conceived as a collective to provide an opportunity for other like-minded players to participate and share in bringing this remarkable music to audiences in the Northwest Washington.

For this performance the band will include:

  • Andy Carr, piano

  • Mark Kelly, sax and flute

  • Andy Simmons, bass

  • Cary Stevens, drums

  • Loch Clark, trumpet and flugelhorn.

Duke Ellington Tribute - Dry Martini

Since the 1920s, the music of Duke Ellington has been a solid influence on
the international jazz scene. Along with various collaborators, most notably
pianist and composer Billy Strayhorn, Ellington and his orchestra produced
such classics as Don't Get Around Much Anymore, Mood Indigo, Sophisticated
Lady, Satin Doll, Take The A Train, Lush Life and many more. A pianist and
composer in his own right, Ellington was arranger and conductor of a group
of musicians sometimes as large as 20 members during its 50-year run,
including notables such as Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams and Ben Webster.
Many vocalists, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett,
have covered these tunes.

The Dry Martini quartet, consisting of J. Michael Newlight (guitar and
vocals), Mike Knutson (alto sax), Steve Webber-Plank (percussion) and Jack
Williams
(bass), will offer a concert evening of this memorable music, the
familiar standards plus a few that are less well known.

Admission is free, but donations to the musicians will be gifted to The
Firehouse to help support its many fine programs. Join us!

Music Monday - Cayley Schmid & aaron Guest

Cayley Schmid and Aaron Guest met at the Bellingham Farmers Market in
2009. Desperately jealous of each other’s busking success, they
neutralized the competition and started a band together. This was the
beginning of a decade-long musical partnership that descended into
marriage. After the retirement of their band, Polecat, in 2020, Aaron and
Cayley suddenly found themselves musically unsupervised by their
bandmates for the first time. Together they play instrumental Celtic music
on fiddle and piano. Tunes range from lively reels and jigs to sweeping airs
and waltzes, and drawing from Scottish, Cape Breton, and Irish traditions.

This event is not ticketed. However, cash donations of appreciation are gladly accepted.

He has studied privately with Dom Famularo, Jim Chapin, David Garibaldi, Freddie Gruber, Derico Watson, Will Kennedy, and four-time world champion Scottish snare drummer, John Scullion.

Over the years Steve has performed with such artists as guitarist Roger Fisher (Heart), saxophonist Hank Crawford, organist Jimmy McGriff, and many highly regarded local and regional players. He currently performs with his eclectic instrumental rock band the 350s, folk rock quartet 3 Track Mind, and as a duo with his wife Kristy (Steve and Kristy Smith), as well as hosting monthly jazz sessions with longtime friends Jon Alberts and Paul Gabrielson, plus a rotating cast of guest musicians.

"Local Legends" - Bob Storms and Bill MacDonough

"Local Legends" Bill MacDonough & Bob Storms play the music of Benny Goodman & Artie Shaw

The music selected for this "get-together” style concert is from the 1940s, and features the music of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Songs will be a bit different in length as in the days of 78 speed records the 3 minute recordings are a bit different because of limitations of the records. Most of the solo work will be by Bill MacDonough on the piano, and Bob Storms on clarinet.

You might notice that the only “music” on stage will be our list of songs. There won’t be a rehearsal, it’s a concert strictly off-the-cuff. Songs for the concert will be played by a jazz quartet made up of two other musicians, Jud Sherwood, and Tom Anastasio. They will fill out the quartet, and should be considered “local legends" as well for their work in playing jazz over many years in our county.

Boasting over 75 years of collective experience, this powerhouse ensemble has maintained its original lineup since the groovy year of 1979, creating a musical synergy that's simply unmatched. Unlike your typical "pick-up" band, The Atlantics bring an extra layer of magic to their performances. Their longstanding connection allows them to effortlessly read the crowd and deliver the perfect tunes every time. After decades of playing together, their intuitive understanding creates a tight, irresistible sound that sets them apart from bands with less time in the limelight.

Proudly upholding the dance band traditions of the Northwest, The Atlantics dive into an infectious mix of popular music spanning the last 35 years. With members who have shared the stage with legends like John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, and Chubby Checker, they bring a wealth of musical prowess to the party. Their styles range from Rhythm & Blues and Motown hits of the 1960s to Top 40, Rock from the '50s, '60s, '70s, and '80s, as well as soulful jazz and easy listening for those laid-back moments.

Featuring a lineup of keyboards (Paul Klein), bass (Mike Copland), guitar (Geeb Johnston), drums (Cary Stevens), and saxophone/flute (Mark Kelly), each of the five members doubles as a vocalist, harmonizing to perfection and capturing the essence of the original classics. As you groove to their repertoire that includes hits like "Celebration," "I Feel Good," "Twist & Shout," and many more, you'll experience the magic that only comes from a band with The Atlantics' unmatched longevity and musical camaraderie. Get ready to dance the night away and immerse yourself in the timeless sounds of this extraordinary ensemble!

Cabin Fever NW Concert

Cabin Fever NW Concert

Cabin Fever NW in Concert

Cabin Fever NW celebrates a full band reunion with a hometown concert at The FireHouse!

What began as an adventure by two best friends, Cabin Fever NW has grown into a powerful quintet including Dianne Bochsler (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Tara Caldwell (vocals, claw hammer banjo) of Bellingham, WA, Ed Johnson (vocals, lead guitar) of Menlo Park, CA, Paul Elliott (vocals, fiddle) of Seattle, WA, and Cary Black (vocals, bass fiddle) of Sebastopol, CA.

Dianne Bochsler's musical career began by singing duets and playing guitar with her father. She adopted an important piece of his life philosophy: happiness is playing a guitar and singing with friends. Her love of the stage took her all the way from upstate New York to Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. When she saw the music scene in the Pacific Northwest, she realized she had to be part of it. She followed her heart's desire and jumped into the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, where she found a bottomless well of inspiration.

Tara Caldwell’s musical roots rise from the mountains and prairies of Alberta and the folk traditions of the labor movement. An accomplished singer and songwriter, Tara finds inspiration in the brighter spots as well as the darker corners of human experience. As a two-year-old child, she "imprinted" with the banjo and has been following it around ever since. When Tara and Dianne met at their children’s preschool, they discovered their near-perfect vocal blend and immediately grew ambitious about performing, recording, and living out their musical dreams together.

Ed Johnson is a master of musical styles ranging from folk to Brazilian to classical. He is highly esteemed and sought after as a guitarist, bandleader, record producer, vocalist, teacher, and musical consultant. His vibrant, original contemporary jazz recordings have earned him fans and airplay worldwide. Ed tours regularly with numerous bands, including his own Novo Tempo. (www.edbjohnson.com).

Paul Elliott is an extremely versatile and respected West Coast fiddle player. He is a member of the legendary country group Sons of the Pioneers, originally founded in 1934 by Roy Rogers and sporting their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has performed with The Good Old Persons, John Reischman, Michelle Shocked, Alison Brown, Buell Neidlinger, and many others. His recording credits span film, television, and radio, and a long list of recordings including Scott Nygaard’s No Hurry on the Rounder label.

Cary Black is an inventive and expert bassist, described by Alan Senauke in Sing Out! Magazine as “a musician’s musician”. He performs, records and teaches a variety of styles including blues, funk, Brazilian, jazz, bluegrass, pop and rock. Cary has recorded and performed with a vast array of world-class acts including The Kingston Trio, Glen Yarbrough, The Grand Ol’ Opry, Mollie O’Brien, A Prairie Home Companion, The Kathy Kallick Band, Laurie Lewis, and Nina Gerber.

Lydia McCauley Reunion Concert

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Lydia McCauley returns to the stage for a rare Reunion Concert.

A unique voice in world music, McCauley’s compositions are shaped by Contemporary, Folk, and Classical influences, blending ancient tones with modern textures to create an immersive and soulful listening experience. She has released six albums over the past two decades, beginning with Sabbath Day’s Journey in 1998, described by Newberry Award-winning author Madeleine L’Engle as, “The words are just as good as the music.”

Her follow-up album, Entrances (1999), was praised as “a provocative blend of mysticism, intelligence and beauty” by Connie Dover of Taylor Park Music. In 2002, Lydia released two recordings: The Beauty of the Earth, which became the top-selling New Age album of 2003 for Goldenrod Music Distributors, and The Moon of Wintertime, a collection of sacred and traditional songs spanning the 13th century to today. Her 2004 release ForeignLander offered newly arranged Appalachian folk music, hailed by Dan Maher of NWPR as “sophisticated Folk—refreshing, with good energy!” She followed with her first instrumental album, Quieting (2008), a deeply reflective journey inspired by her reverence for the natural world.

For this intimate concert, Lydia will be joined by a gifted ensemble of longtime collaborators:

Phil Heaven – viola

Nancy Rumbel – Grammy Award-winning oboe and ocarina

Brian Cunningham – guitars

Lynne Givler – bass and vocals

Music Monday - Dry Martini

Music Monday - Dry Martini

The name Dry Martini is an homage to the alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, who famously remarked that he wanted to sound like a dry martini.

It also acknowledges the band's friends and mentors, saxophonist Brent Jensen and guitarist Jamie Findlay, whose 2001 and 2021 CDs are titled "The Sound of A Dry Martini" and "More Sounds of A Dry Martini", respectively.

Mike Knutson started playing alto sax in high school and college. After a hiatus of many years, he has again taken up the sax, reflecting his lifetime love of jazz.

Michael Newlight started on guitar in high school. In the '70s, he performed throughout the Northwest as half of the folk duo "Judith & Michael." Later, he and his nasty black Les Paul Custom guitar fronted the short-lived Bellingham rock band Secret Lives. Then came solo performances here and there as blues musician Mike Leo. At last, following this restless many-decade journey through folk, blues, and rock, he has arrived at relaxed domesticity, bossa nova, and cool jazz.

Steve Webber-Plank began his initial percussion journey in 1956 at a So Cal music store with weekly lessons and he worked his way thru high school playing Sat night Two Step & Polka gigs in a country Italian pizzeria and road house. His real love was Afro-Cuban Caribbean rhythms popular at the time and he bonded with the Bossa Nova tunes introduced in the late ‘50’s.  Big Band greats like Benny Goodman and his Carnegie Hall performance played a role in his love for rhythm, with the early Be-bop and later smooth jazz era of the mid-century music scene. He’s pleased to partner with Bellingham’s Dry Martini and share the Love.
